The Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine has had another remarkable year. I am proud to share our innovations, achievements, and more in our 2025 Specialty Report.
My hope is that you and your institution can gain insights from what we have learned and accomplished. I invite you to learn more about: the updates to our educational programs, including our role in the medical students’ curriculum redesign; advancements in evidence-based research, including our findings on the privatization of hospice; and innovative clinical programs, including data analysis and system-wide collaboration. I am also particularly proud of the Brookdale Department’s commitment to and ongoing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts.
Our department was the first of its kind, setting the stage for modern geriatrics care and pioneering leadership in palliative medicine. We have revolutionized care for older adults, people with serious illnesses, and their caregivers, and yet our work is far from complete. To assist us in our mission, we had the fortune of recruiting three esteemed faculty this year: Allison J. Applebaum, PhD, who will lead our new Center for Caregiving; Robert M. Arnold, MD, who has already made great strides in improving our Professional Development program; and Orna Intrator, PhD, who will enhance our care of United States veterans and further our understanding of their unique experiences.
The Brookdale Department’s mission is to deliver the highest quality health care to older adults, persons with serious illness, and their caregivers while advancing the fields of geriatrics and palliative care through clinical care, education, research, and health policy. Most recently, our work and commitment to patient care was reflected in the U.S. News & World Report® Best Hospitals 2024-2025 survey. The Mount Sinai Hospital is the No. 1 Best Geriatrics Hospital in the nation for the fifth consecutive year while Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West ranked together in the top 50. Such recognition is a credit to every member, past and present, of our robust and dedicated team.
I am grateful to you for your interest in our work. Thank you for reading the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine’s 2025 Specialty Report.
