Frontiers in Discovery and Care: Genetics and Genomic Sciences 2024

Cutting-edge research, and clinical innovations from Mount Sinai’s Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences

At the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the frontiers of science and medicine are not just being explored - they are being redefined. This year’s report highlights the depth and diversity of our efforts to unravel the genetic architecture of disease and bring innovative therapies to patients through precision medicine.

Across our laboratories and clinics, faculty are driving discovery - from pioneering research on the role of microglia in Alzheimer’s disease and breakthroughs in rare disease gene identification, to first-in-human gene therapy trials and the use of artificial intelligence to accelerate diagnostics and drug discovery. Our translational focus remains a hallmark: moving seamlessly from bench to bedside to ensure that even the rarest patients are not left behind.

This issue also introduces new faculty leaders and program launches, including our growing efforts in integrative microbiome research and initiatives designed to intercept disease before symptoms appear. These stories reflect not only scientific excellence but also our commitment to collaboration, patient-centered care, and health equity.

Together, we are shaping a future where genetic and genomic science delivers not just answers, but actionable solutions - tailored to the individual, and informed by data, discovery, and compassion.
