Last year, 2023, was another exciting year for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Among our many accomplishments, U.S. News & World Report® ranked The Mount Sinai Hospital No. 11 nationally for Orthopedics for 2023-2024, and Newsweek again ranked The Mount Sinai Hospital among the top 25 orthopedic programs in the world.

We were proud to serve for the 11th year in a row as the official medical services provider for the US Open Tennis Championships, and for Melissa Leber, MD, to join our first all-woman leadership team overseeing player medical services for the tournament. Dr. Leber, who served alongside Alexis Colvin, MD, the first woman and Asian American to serve as the tournament’s Chief Medical Officer, is the second woman to hold the position in the tournament’s history. Her appointment is a testament to Mount Sinai's dedication to advancing gender parity and diversity in the field of Orthopedics and beyond.

As a department situated within the Mount Sinai Health System—a network of eight hospitals that reach across the New York metropolitan area and surrounding region—we are uniquely poised to creatively deliver world-class care to an expanding population through clinical care pathways while collecting quality metrics. As the Department’s chair, I strive daily to encourage a culture of collaboration across Mount Sinai departments and hospitals. By combining our talents and resources, we will realize our vision of clinical, educational, and research excellence.

In Orthopedics, we have a unique opportunity to impact our patients’ lives through our restorative treatments. By combining medical care with meaningful research in both clinical and basic science areas, the Department works to improve the practice of orthopedic surgery for both current and future generations of orthopedic surgeons. One of our greatest strengths is our ability to gather data and information from our patient population across the Mount Sinai Health System. Our outcomes research will carry significant weight in the practice of orthopedics. We are dedicated to growing our Orthopedic Research Laboratories at Mount Sinai over the next few years and focus on basic science and translational breakthroughs.

The Department encourages a fresh perspective and an infusion of energy and resources that work synergistically with existing faculty and staff to continue to improve upon the great work that we do. We are fostering the academic aspirations of faculty, residents, fellows, and students, as well as continuing and expanding outstanding patient care. For these reasons, we are in a special time, full of potential and opportunity, both within the Health System and the Department, and that is why Mount Sinai is an ideal place for both giving, and receiving, care.

I am proud U.S. News & World Report® ranked The Mount Sinai Hospital No. 11 nationally for Orthopedics for 2023-2024. I hope you will consider supporting us again in 2024, and invite you to learn more about our programs, our faculty, and our commitment to be the best in medical education, patient care, and scientific research.
