The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai added five new physicians during the 2019-2020 academic year. These highly skilled surgeons will join the ranks of the School’s well regarded faculty in the subspecialties of joint replacement, foot and ankle surgery, spine surgery, and hand and upper extremity surgery.

Brett L. Hayden, MD, is a joint replacement surgeon of the hip and knee who specializes in complex and revision joint replacement with specific expertise and training in orthopedic oncology. Dr. Hayden completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction/joint replacement at Brigham and Women’s Hospital during which he gained extensive experience in complex and revision hip and knee arthroplasty as well as unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and primary total hip and total knee arthroplasty. He has particular training in treating acetabular defects with trabecular metal augments as well as tissue preserving approaches to total hip replacement including direct superior approach and direct anterior approach. Dr. Hayden also completed fellowship training in musculoskeletal oncology. During fellowship, he treated adult and pediatric patients with malignant bone and soft tissue sarcomas with specific emphasis on complex pelvic and acetabular tumors and limb salvage.

Meghan Kelly, MD, PhD, specializes in foot and ankle disorders. She completed a foot and ankle fellowship at the University of California at Davis/Reno Orthopaedic Clinic. Prior to medical school, Dr. Kelly received her PhD in physiology and biophysics from Boston University School of Medicine researching cellular metabolism and the effects of exercise. This unique background of both clinical and basic science research has resulted in numerous publications in both the basic science and orthopedic literature and has led to the presenting of her work at both national and international meetings. In addition, she is involved with the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society serving on the health policy and humanitarian committees and is a member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society.

Jun S. Kim, MD, specializes in cervical spine and scoliosis surgery, using a combination of minimally invasive, open, and microsurgical techniques to treat disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He has successfully treated advanced scoliosis and deformities of the spine in adult and pediatric patients. Dr. Kim completed a spine fellowship in adult and pediatric scoliosis and deformity surgery at Columbia University Medical Center where he served as an Assistant Attending Physician and a Clinical Instructor. He believes that modern spine care should be comprehensive and multidisciplinary. In practice, he considers it imperative that all non-surgical avenues be explored and trialed before surgery is considered. And, if and when surgery becomes necessary, Dr. Kim believes it should be personalized to the patient.

Nolan Maher, MD, specializes in hip and knee surgery with a focus on minimally invasive joint replacement, complex revision joint replacement, joint preservation, and hip fracture surgery. He completed his fellowship training in joint replacement and adult reconstructive surgery at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital as well as at the Insall Scott Kelly Institute. He has extensive training in direct anterior approach and mini-posterior hip replacement surgery; computer navigation and robotic assisted surgery; partial knee replacement surgery; joint preservation treatment options and surgery; and arthroscopic surgery.

Amanda Walsh, MD, specializes in all aspects of upper extremity surgery including arthritic and traumatic disorders of the hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow. Her expertise includes minimally invasive and arthroscopic procedures, treatment of peripheral nerve pathology, pediatric hand conditions, congenital hand conditions, microsurgical reconstruction and trauma. Dr. Walsh completed the Hand and Upper Extremity fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. During fellowship, she benefited from integrated orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery training rounding out her skill set in treatment of upper extremity pathology and microsurgical technique.
