During the 2024-2025 academic year, the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai added two talented physicians to its roster: John K. Cordero, MD, and Alexander M. Crawford, MD, MPH.

John K. Cordero, MD, Assistant Professor, Orthopedics, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, is a fellowship-trained hip and knee reconstruction specialist who sees patients at The Orthopedic Center at Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai-Union Square. Through advanced, patient-centered joint replacement care, he helps individuals restore mobility, relieve pain, and return to active, fulfilling lives.

Dr. Cordero specializes in the full spectrum of hip and knee reconstruction, including minimally invasive hip and knee surgery, partial knee replacement, and complex primary and revision joint replacement. He is highly experienced in direct anterior and mini-posterior approaches to hip replacement, as well as computer-navigated and robotic-assisted surgical techniques. His clinical expertise also includes management of infected hip and knee replacements and treatment of periprosthetic fractures, allowing him to care for both routine and highly complex cases.

With the growing demand for hip and knee replacement procedures, Dr. Cordero’s philosophy emphasizes thoughtful surgical planning, precision techniques, and individualized care to achieve the best possible outcomes for every patient. He is particularly focused on rapid recovery protocols and outpatient joint replacement, helping patients heal faster while minimizing complications and opioid use.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Cordero is actively involved in research that is advancing the field of adult reconstruction. His work focuses on complex primary and revision of total hip and knee replacement, opioid-sparing surgical pathways, rapid recovery strategies, and robotic-assisted joint replacement. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and regularly presents his research at national orthopedic meetings.

Dr. Cordero is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Through his clinical expertise, research, and commitment to innovation, he strives to provide patients with the safest, most effective, and most advanced joint replacement care available.

Alexander M. Crawford, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Orthopedics, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, is a Harvard- and the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute-trained spine surgeon who sees patients at The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai Brooklyn. He primarily operates at The Mount Sinai Hospital but also covers calls at Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai Morningside. Through expert, personalized spine care, he helps patients restore mobility, relieve pain, and return to the activities they love.

Dr. Crawford treats the full spectrum of spinal conditions, including degenerative diseases such as arthritis and disc herniations, scoliosis, trauma, infection, tumors, and complex revision cases. He offers both open and minimally invasive options, matching each approach to the patient’s specific needs. His philosophy emphasizes thoughtful diagnosis, individualized treatment, clear communication, and evidence-based protocols to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Dr. Crawford completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program and a spine surgery fellowship at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, two of the most respected training environments in the country. During this time, he worked closely with many of the foremost experts and thought leaders in spine surgery. He continues to build on these collaborations in his current practice and research.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Crawford advances spine care through research and education. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in leading journals such as The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, The Spine Journal, and Spine. His work addresses cost and quality variation in spine care, disparities in outcomes, radiation safety, opioid safety, and surgical innovation. He also earned a Master of Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, shaping his focus on health services research, artificial intelligence, surgical safety, and value-based care.

Dr. Crawford’s contributions have been recognized with multiple national awards. He serves as an associate editor for Spine, the most cited journal in the field, and is a peer reviewer for several other leading publications. Through clinical and academic pursuits, he helps shape the future of spine surgery and ensures that patients benefit from the most current, effective, and safest treatment options available.
