A leading specialist in menopause and integrative medicine, Anna Barbieri, MD, FACOG, in January 2025 was named the Clinical Strategy Leader for the Carolyn Rowan Center for Women's Health and Wellness, a state-of-the-art health center that will offer integrative health care services for women at all life stages. Set to open within the coming year, the Center will unite multiple specialties and services focused on women’s health under one roof, helping to streamline care. Its interdisciplinary approach is designed to provide personalized clinical pathways for each patient, promoting optimal long-term health outcomes.
“We look forward to her leadership in developing what will undoubtedly become a leading destination for women’s health in New York City,” says Joanne L. Stone, MD, MS, the Ellen and Howard C. Katz Chair in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
“The current national landscape of women’s health is plagued by issues of fragmentation, lack of communication, lack of awareness, and lack of treatment for certain conditions,” says Dr. Barbieri. “Mount Sinai’s leadership understands the challenges and has the courage to deal with them in an innovative way. Integrative health is defined by the optimal function of mind, body, and spirit, which requires personalized and coordinated care.”
The Center is named for Carolyn Rowan, a Mount Sinai Trustee who made a transformational gift to support the endeavor. Her vision is to help future generations of women experience a lifetime of well-being in mind and body by enlisting providers who are at the top of their practice in every area of women’s health.

The Center will have a comprehensive perspective, using traditional treatments along with the most well-researched, evidence-based integrative and functional approaches. “I’ve learned—and teach—that we have tools we can use in addition to medications and surgery,” says Dr. Barbieri, who is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Integrative Medicine, a credentialed Menopause Practitioner, and Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “That makes us better doctors.”
Dr. Barbieri first came to Mount Sinai in 1999 to complete her internship and residency training in obstetrics and gynecology, where she served as Chief Resident. She went on to complete her fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at Mount Sinai and joined the OB/GYN faculty. Dr. Barbieri also completed a fellowship in integrative medicine at the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.
Following her tenure at Mount Sinai, Dr. Barbieri became a partner at OB/GYN Westside, PLLC, before establishing her own practice on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where she specializes in integrative medicine and menopause. She also is the founding physician of Elektra Health, a digital menopause education and support platform. Dr. Barbieri has been featured in academic publications as well as in numerous consumer publications and broadcast media for her expertise in women’s health. Dr. Barbieri is a Fellow of The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and certified as a menopause practitioner by The Menopause Society.
Ultimately, the Rowan Center will seek to empower women with the means to optimally care for their bodies, with on-site access to specialists in OB/GYN, cardiology, urology, neurology, and other fields. “Women’s health is not just pregnancy health. It’s also heart health and brain health,” Dr. Barbieri says. “It’s all of those things and more.”
“There’s really nothing like this anywhere else in the country,” Dr. Stone says. “It’s not easy to talk about sexual dysfunction, or weight gain, or being stressed and anxious, so we’re creating an environment where the people you speak to—clinicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners—are really listening to you.”
