Mount Sinai Neurology and Neurosurgery Departments Ranked No. 9 in the Nation

THE MOUNT SINAI Hospital's departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery were top performers in both U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek rankings for 2022–2023, and in National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding.

We are:

  • No. 9 in the nation for adult neurosurgical and neurological care (U.S. News & World Report®, “Best Hospitals” guidebook, 2023–2024)

  • No. 8 in Neurosurgery, and No. 8 in Neurology (Newsweek, World’s Best Specialty Hospitals, 2023)

  • No. 1 in New York State and No. 15 in the nation for neurosurgery National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding (Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, 2022)

  • No. 16 in the nation for neurology NIH funding (Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, 2022)

Welcome, readers. In this Specialty Report, we are excited to share some of our significant accomplishments for 2022.

The Department of Neurosurgery:

  • Authored more than 350 publications in 2021–2022

  • Received an $11.6 million dollar grant for a new surgical innovation center to expand its Mount Sinai BioDesign program, our in-house device incubator for biomedical innovation

  • Implanted the first brain-computer interface device in a patient in the United States with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis that allows the person to text by thinking

  • Recruited outstanding talent, expanded specialized clinical programs, and created sub-specializations

  • Secured the use of machine imaging technology in the operating room.

The Department of Neurology:

  • Completed more than 67,000 outpatient Mount Sinai Health System visits

  • Expanded our outpatient footprint around New York City

  • Became home to the first, and only, EEG lab accredited by ABRET in New York City

  • Welcomed 22 faculty recruits in 2022 in the areas of translational research, headache, neuro-oncology, adult and pediatric epilepsy, neuromuscular, cognitive neurology, stroke, and multiple sclerosis, in response to Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s guidance to expand capacity and research. Fourteen of the recruits are women, three are Black, and five are Asian.
