Meet Our Outstanding Chief Neurosurgery Residents

OVER THE YEARS, Mount Sinai has recruited some of the nation’s leading neurosurgeons who are engaging, innovative, experienced, and committed to exceptional outcomes for their patients. These outstanding academic leaders have a proven track record in training our neurosurgery residents. Here are a few profiles on some of the recent graduates and chief residents who are impacting the field.

Ernest J. Barthélemy, MD, MA, MPH

Residency highlights:

Dr. Barthélemy dedicated his neurosurgery research year to engaging actively in international neurosurgery and earning a master’s degree in public health. He was selected as a Paul Farmer Global Surgery Research Fellow through Harvard Medical School and earned an MPH in Global Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

While studying at Harvard, Dr. Barthélemy divided his time between Massachusetts and Haiti. He worked to increase access to neurosurgical care in Haiti, where there are only a handful of neurosurgeons available to serve 10.6 million people.

Dr. Barthélemy also published multiple papers on neurosurgical care in Haiti to highlight the country’s growing health, neurosurgical, and economic disparities, and worked closely with local individuals and institutions to strengthen Haiti’s health systems.


Robert J. Rothrock, MD

Residency highlights:

Dr. Rothrock is spending his final year of neurosurgical training at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine completing a CAST-approved fellowship in minimally invasive and reconstructive spine surgery. Previously during his residency, he completed an enfolded fellowship in spinal oncology and radiosurgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, during which he published multiple peer-reviewed publications on long-term functional outcomes following separation surgery for metastatic spinal disease, stereotactic radiosurgery for high-grade epidural disease, and surgical management of intradural tumors.

Eric K. Oermann, MD

• Current position: Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiology, NYU Langone Health

• Publications during residency: 65 (including Nature Medicine, NeurIPS, ML4H, PLOS Medicine, Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology)

Residency highlights:

Serving as Director of AISINAI, a consortium dedicated to studying artificial and natural intelligence and its role in improving medicine, Dr. Oermann secured $650,000 in funding. During his residency, he completed a research fellowship as a machine learning engineer at Google and Verily Life Sciences, and his research on automated deep-neural-network surveillance of cranial images for acute neurologic events was published in Nature Medicine in 2018. Dr. Oermann was selected in 2018 to participate in the New York Academy of Science’s Interstellar Initiative where his team won the Neuroscience award.

Dr. Oermann was selected as a Forbes “30 Under 30” for his work on using machine learning to develop prognostic models for cancer patients. He was also nominated for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons’ Innovator of the Year award, and in 2020, he was nominated to the American Academy of Neurosurgery as an Emerging Investigator. He also serves as Associate Editor of Neurosurgery.

Ian T. McNeill, MD, MS

• Current position: Spine Surgery Fellow, University of California, San Francisco

Residency highlights:

Dr. McNeill developed an interest in adult spinal deformity surgery and quality improvement, and completed an enfolded complex spine fellowship under John Caridi, MD. He maintained a robust commitment to community outreach and engagement, founding in 2017 Doctors Reaching Minority Males Exploring Neurosurgery (DR. MMEN), a summer immersion/mentorship program for African-American and Latino male high school students interested in medicine and neurosurgery. He was inducted into the Mount Sinai AOA Chapter in 2019. He is also credited as the first Mount Sinai resident to cut a titanium rod with one hand.

Jonathan J. Rasouli, MD

• Current Position: Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, Cleveland Clinic

Residency highlights:

Dr. Rasouli’s clinical focuses were deep brain stimulation and adult spinal deformity surgery. After residency, he completed an orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery spine fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. He published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and presented his research at national and international neurosurgical meetings. He also provided interviews for CNN, The Washington Post, Doximity, Becker’s Spine, and Spinal News International.

Meg E. Pain, MD

• Current Position: Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University and Bristol-Myers-Squibb Children's Hospital

Residency highlights:

Throughout her residency and during her research year, Dr. Pain worked closely with the neurocritical care team and neuro-oncologists and developed a passion for pediatric neurosurgery. After residency, she completed a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship and served as Clinical Instructor of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University. Her published neuro-oncology research on various meningioma topics appeared in a number of journals, including Neuroradiology, Neurological Sciences, Neuro-Oncology, Clinical Neurosurgery, Cancer Immunology Research, World Neurosurgery, Oncotarget, Operative Neurosurgery, and Neurosurgical Review.
