Carol J. Levy, MD, Director of the Mount Sinai Diabetes Center, and her team expanded access to diabetes technology, benefiting populations traditionally underserved, including pregnant women with type 1 diabetes and individuals with type 2 diabetes requiring intensive insulin therapy.

Andrew F. Stewart, MD, Director of the Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Institute (DOMI), and his team furthered their pioneering research, demonstrating that a combination of GLP-1RA and harmine promotes regeneration of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Esra Karakose, PhD, elucidated key mechanisms underlying DYRK1A inhibition and GLP-1RA action. At DOMI, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Catalyst Award granted Prashant Rajbhandari, PhD, a $4 million, five-year award to investigate “mammokines,” a novel class of hormones influencing metabolic health. Dirk Homann, MD, secured funding to extend research predicting the onset and progression of type 1 diabetes, while Donald Scott, PhD, and Liora Katz, PhD, advanced their efforts to preserve beta cell mass.

Alice C. Levine, MD, Director of our Endocrinology Fellowship—the nation’s largest—was honored with the 2025 Endocrine Society Laureate Award for Outstanding Educator. She further distinguished herself with a case review, developed with Rachel Sheskier, MD, underscoring the vital role of endocrinologists in managing adrenocortical carcinoma, a rare and aggressive malignancy.

In transgender medicine, Joshua Safer, MD, and Daniel Slack, MD, published two studies refining the understanding and application of gender-affirming hormone therapy. In the field of thyroid disorders, Terry F. Davies, MD, a leader in Graves’ disease and thyroid eye disease research, elucidated their physiologic mechanisms in two recent publications.

In January 2025, I had the privilege of delivering a keynote presentation at the Women's Health: Genes, Data, and Advancing Approaches conference on the Wellcome Genome Campus in England, a highly prestigious international expert meeting where I was one of two keynote speakers.

The Mount Sinai Hospital was again nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report® for Diabetes and Endocrinology in 2024-2025. I am privileged to work alongside such dedicated physicians, scientists, and educators. I invite you to explore the Division’s clinical and research initiatives in the following articles.
